Date of Workaround Release

1. Impact

Sun Virtual Tape Library Plus 1.0/2.0 (VTL) is unable to restore or export data from a virtual tape, which may cause data integrity issues.

2. Contributing Factors

This issue can occur in the following releases:

x86 Platform
  • Sun Virtual Tape Library Plus 1.0, 2.0 for Solaris 10
Note:  VTL Plus 1.0 and VTL Plus 2.0 run on Solaris 10 only.
  1. VTL Plus 1.0 models are: VTL1140, VTL2540, VTL3540, and VTL Value
  2. VTL Plus 2.0 models are: VTL1200, VTL1202, VTL2600 and VTL3600
For VTL Plus 1.0, this issue was introduced in Build1323 with patch 08 (update-vt132308solaris10) and occurs when utilizing software compression. Data block size was between 240K and 256K, and the data is highly incompressible(less than 1.5 to 1). This includes VTL Plus1.0 with patch 09, patch 10, patch 11, and patch 12.

For VTL Plus 2.0, this issue was introduced at the initial install level and occurs when utilizing software compression. Data block size was between 240K and 256K, and the data is highly incompressible (less than1.5 to 1). This includes VTL Plus 2.0 with patch 01 and patch 02 installed.

3. Symptoms

A media read error will occur during restore or export.

Error messages would appear similar to the following example:

Feb 28 04:32:10 'server' genunix: [ID 459543 kern.notice]
<6>[fffffe8001ebac80] TLE_ERROR:
READ:Tape:10061, Decompression failed -6, CompSize 262081, ActualSize
262144, RetSize 5
Feb 28 04:32:10 'server' genunix: [ID 459543 kern.notice]
<6>[fffffe8001ebac80] TLE_ERROR: 10046: Read
Block Failed, Tape -89 1199488, THL 262144, CurBlockSize -2053872248

4. Workaround

To work around this issue, disable software compression or write block sizes smaller than 240K from the backup application.

5. Resolution

This issue is adressed in the following releases, available from Sun Support:
  • For VTL Plus 1.0: Patch 13 revision update-vt1132309solaris10
Note: Patches 09, 10, 11 and 12 are pre-requisites for Patch 13 and must be applied in order before applying Patch 13.
