Applies to:

Sun StorageTek VSM System - Version 4 to 5C [Release 4.0 to 5.0]
IBM z/OS on System z

Symptoms

While using the ETTFB (Early Time To First Byte) feature the VSM (VTSS) encounters a device hang that requires a cold boot (power cycle) of the VSM to recover.

Cause

There is a microcode fault in D02.14 and H02.14 levels of microcode that can result in this problem.

Solution

Turn off ETTFB (Early Time To First Byte) until the VSM (VTSS) is running on D02.15 or H02.15 code.

Release of these code levels is currently scheduled for the end of October, 2012.

The default setting for the ETTFB parameter is no.

If ETTFB is enabled then the parameter to turn it off is: FASTRECL =  NO
