Symptoms

System is restarting with the message "SC Request to Reset Host due to Watchdog"

Cause

Solaris is hanging causing the watchdog to reset the system.  This is NOT an indication of a hardware failure.

The SC watchdog watches Solaris, not the hardware. When Solaris does not respond to the SC after a certain amount of time, the watchdog is triggered. Depending on the settings the SC can reset, dump a core T1 based systems only) , or do nothing.

Solution

Have customer change the ALOM setting sys_autorestart to none or dumpcore (for T1 based systems).  Ex: setsc sys_autorestart dumpcore.

If option 'none' is used you will need to manually force a dump when Solaris hangs again.

  1. Use #. to get to ALOM if you are not already there

  2. Type 'break', then 'console -f to get to the ok prompt.'

  3. At the ok prompt type 'sync'

If option 'dumpcore' is used the corefile should already be produced.
