Recent changes to the Sun Rack II enclosure cause the original M4000 rail kit to run about 1/8" (3mm) too long to fit between the RETMA rails as described in the SPARC Enterprise Sun Rack 1000/900/II Equipment Rack Mounting Guide.

Symptoms

Rail kits originally shipped with SPARC Enterprise M4000 servers are 1/8" (3mm) too long to fit between the RETMA rails of a Sun Rack II enclosure as described in the SPARC Enterprise Sun Rack 1000/900/II Equipment Rack Mounting Guide.

Changes

The thickness of the Sun Rack II RETMA rails was increased roughly the same time as the change from the blue Sun logo to the red and black Sun Oracle logo in the latter part of 2011.

Cause

While the distance between the outside surface of the front RETMA rail and the outside surface of the rear RETMA rail remains the same at 27" (686mm), the rails themselves are now thicker, affecting the inside to inside dimension. The rail kits originally shipped with SPARC Enterprise M4000 servers had always just fit between the RETMA rails of the Sun Rack II enclosure. Rail kits originally shipped with SPARC Enterprise M4000 servers are 1/8" (3mm) too long to fit between the RETMA rails of a Sun Rack II enclosure with the thicker rails.

Solution

A Version 2 M4000 rail kit was introduced in mid 2012. Along with other improvements, the Version 2 rail kits currently shipping with the M4000 have a wider adjustment range than the original (Version 1) rail kit and have no problem fitting between the RETMA rails of the currently shipping Sun Rack II enclosures.  The Version 2 rail kits continue to fit the older Sun Rack II enclosures as well as the Sun Rack 1000.

For situations where M4000s shipped with Version 1 rail kits encounter one of the newer Sun Rack IIs, a FRU Version 2 rail kit should be used in place of the Version 1 rail kit.  The red and black Sun Oracle logo is the best indicator of a Sun Rack II with the thicker RETMA rails.

Version 1 and Version 2 M4000 rail kit identification

Note that both the Version 1 and Version 2 M4000 rail kits have inner slides which mount to the M4000 and outer rails which mount to the rack.  While the inner slides of both the Version 1 and Version 2 rail kits look similar, they are not interchangeable. Take care not to mix components of a Version 1 rail kit with a Version 2 rail kit.

The FRU PN for the Version 1 rail kit is F371-0096.  To order a Version 2 rail kit, specify F350-1617.

There is no similar Version 2 M5000 rail kit.  The original 371-0095 M5000 rail kit has sufficient adjustment range to fit between the RETMA rails of the newer Sun Rack II enclosures.
