Applies to:

Sun SPARC Enterprise M3000 Server - Version All Versions and later
Solaris SPARC Operating System - Version 10 11/06 U3 and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

 When booting a new M3000 via bge0 via jumpstart, booting does not finish with the following message :

ok boot net -v -s
...
SunOS Release 5.10 Version Generic_141444-09 64-bit
...
Boot device: /pci@0,600000/pci@0/pci@1/network@0  File and args: -v -s
...
strplumb: unable to get device info for /pci@0,600000/pci@0/pci@1/network@0
strplumb: resolve_netdrv: 6
...
ERROR: bpgetfile unable to access network

Changes

 The same boot net worked with older systems.

Cause

The network path indicates this is a new M3000 SPARC64VII+.
Minimum required version is Solaris 10u9 (09/10) with patch 144563-02 for SPARC64 VII+ support on M3000 .

See

SPARC Enterprise M3000/M4000/M5000/M8000/M9000 Server Matrix for Hardware, Firmware and Software ( <Document 1145383.1> )

Solution

  1. Verify M3000 system architecture. This can be done via boot net bge0 in OBP.
    Boot device: /pci@0,600000/pci@0/pci@1/pci@0/network@4 --> M3000 with SPARC64 VII
    Boot device: /pci@0,600000/pci@0/pci@1/network@0 --> M3000 with SPARC64VII+
  2. Check  Doc ID 1145383.1 for minimum required versions per system architecture.
  3. Ensure your boot server provides the minimum Solaris version, e.g. s10u9 with patch 144563-02 or higher. The quickest way to achieve this is to use s10u10 here.
