If the library card cage is power cycled, the sub-systems either disappear completely or show red on the SL console. This problem is observed with code versions older that 6.xx (4.xx or lower). The HBC/HBT complete their initialization process, however the subsystem (BOTs, elevator, PTPs, CAPs) do not re-announce presence. This results in the HBC not communicating with these subsystems.

BOTs, Elevators, CAPs Disappear or Show Red After a Power Cycle of the Card Cage

Cause

Firmware not properly detecting correct status of components.

Solution

To bring back and successfully initialize all sub-systems within the SL8500 library, follow the procedure outlined below while performing a power cycle of the library card cage.

(This is sometimes necessary to resolve a communication issue, or to replace a card in the card cage (HBC/HBT):

1. Remove rail power by hitting the ERS button on the front keypad panel.

2. Power down the card cage using the 4 white circuit breakers below the cards in the card cage.

3. Wait one minute (or perform the necessary replacement operation) and re-apply power to the card cage by flipping the white circuit breakers below the cards in the card cage.

4. Wait for both the HBC and the HBT cards to complete their initialization (green LED on the card panel illuminates).

5. Log in to the local SL console panel (if present, if not, connect your laptop and lauch a remote SL console session). The 'System Details' panel will show no subsystems (BOTs, elevators, PTPs, CAPs) or a partial list of subsystems or, the subsystems will have a red icon next to them.

6. At this point re-apply rail power by pusing on the ERS button.

7. Wait for all subsystems to complete initialization and show green icons on the SL console (local or remote).

NOTE: This problem does not occur with 6.xx or higher code versions. Since a heatbeat has been implemented in these code versions which enables the library controller (HBC) to detect all subsystems even if they do not announce themselves.
