Sun StorageTek SL8500 Modular Library System - Version Not Applicable and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

VSM capacity goes to near full.

Left elevator reported RC_3206 error before putting cart V_410534 into,
Left bot was requested to reset and cart V_410534 needed to be moved to dropoff slot due to initialization process. But cart V_410534 was put into elevator and remained that location.
However library controller expected cart is in dropoff slot but unexpectedly found in left elevator.

Cause

Library controller did not send LSM degraded and/or not ready because this was not a bot error. Finally several mount and dismount requests were stuck due to destination full with elevator occupancy by V_410534. As this result, VSM capacity went to 99% full.

Library left elevator returned inconsistent response

Solution

Engineering has fixed the portion of the problem that leaves a stranded cartridge in an intransit location, in this case an elevator slot. This stranded cartridge causes jobs to continously fail whenever a job attempts to use this slot.

The library will now add the stranded cartridge to the intransit recovery list. Intransit recovery will handle the cartridge disposition of return to source or put cartridge to system cell with host notification of further recovery. This fix addresses the VSM backing up due to libray jobs failing over a long period of time.

Fixed in FRS_8.0 scheduled for a late July 2012 release.
