7000 Appliance OS (Fishworks)

Symptoms

A reboot of a Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage does not boot completely. It stps somewhere between Solaris banner and before Appliance Software banner.

To discuss this information further with Oracle experts and industry peers, we encourage you to review, join or start a discussion in the My Oracle Support Community - 7000 Series ZFS Appliances

Cause

On some occasions it is possible that the metainit service gets enabled and is either in the "online" or "maintenance" state when it should actually be disabled. The default configuration of this service stored in a SMF manifest proves that it should be disabled. It seems that the metasync service is not disabled by default and as it depends on metainit, it could try to start metainit.

In some occasions the boot succeeds if the system is booted to milestone none and the from milestone none the system is booted to milestone all.

With remote access an Oracle support engineer could verify if thee services are online by accident. To engage an engineer please open a Service Request with Oracle Support.

"Warning : Although not intended/expected to cause damage, the following command(s)/instruction(s) should only be carried out by an Oracle TSC or Field Support engineer trained to work at the Solaris Shell on the ZFS Storage Appliance. If you are at all unsure whether to proceed, please stop and consult with your manager or supervisor.".

Data which should be gathered to verify that the system is showing that defect described in <SunBug 6999288>.

Checking the SVM services status may show something like this:

ZFSSA 7000# svcs -a |grep meta
disabled       Jul_02   svc:/network/rpc/meta:default
disabled       Jul_02   svc:/network/rpc/metamh:default
disabled       Jul_02   svc:/network/rpc/metamed:default
online          8:01:16 svc:/system/metainit:default
offline        Jul_02   svc:/system/metasync:default

Solution

Open a service request with Oracle to engage an Oracle Support Engineer to verify that the Sun Storage 7000 is suffering from this known issue with the configuration of the service facility, and then to correct it.

Changing the SMF configuration requires remote access for the Oracle Support Engineer, it also requires accessing the emergency shell on the appliance which should only be carried out by experienced support personal.

The action plan will basically look like this

  1. provide remote access to the ILOM of the appliance (shared shell)
  2. disable the service preventing the system from normal boot
  3. reboot system to verify the implementation of the workaround

From the action plan it is obvious that at least a reboot is required, so please plan for a downtime.
