Applies to:

Sun Fire X4170 M2 Server - Version Not Applicable and later
Oracle Enterprise Linux 4.0

Symptoms

X4170 M2 server has two dual-port 10GbE cards installed, yet an ifconfig -a only shows one interface from each card (plus the 4 on-board 1GbE interfaces).

# ifconfig -a | grep HWaddr
eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:1B:21:C2:22:C8
eth1      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:1B:21:C2:22:48
eth2      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:21:28:E7:22:22
eth3      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:21:28:E7:22:23
eth4      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:21:28:E7:22:24
eth5      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:21:28:E7:22:25

eth2, eth3,eth4,eth5 are the onboard.  eth0 and eth1 are one interface from each of the cards.

Two interfaces from the dual-port 10gbe cards not listed:

# grep 'ixgbe_probe: failed to load' /var/log/messages
# grep 'failed to load' /var/log/messages
May 22 13:36:33 ovmaacn06 kernel: ixgbe 0000:13:00.1: failed to load because an unsupported SFP+ module type was detected.
May 22 13:36:33 ovmaacn06 kernel: ixgbe 0000:19:00.1: failed to load because an unsupported SFP+ module type was detected.

The physical interfaces that do not appear in ifconfig -a do not have the following line associated with them in an lspci -v output:

Kernel driver in use: ixgbe

The working interfaces do.

Cause

Fault with cables QSFP to 4x SFP+ Splitter Cable   530-4451 [R]   X2125A-3M

Solution

If similar fault found , replace the Ethernet cable. Here it is  QSFP to 4x SFP+ Splitter Cable   530-4451 [R]   X2125A-3

With the replacement cables all interfaces are present and messges no longer shows any SFP errors.
