Symptoms

Unable to access files on a share even though permissions are open.  File permissions can be modified and new files can be added but attempts to open the files returns permission denied.

Cause

The virus scan service was enabled and running, no virus engine was configured and the vscan property on the problem share was set to true.

This resulted in 'permission denied' on attempts to read each file due to failure of the requested virus scan.

Solution

Correct the virus scan configuration.

If no virus scan engine is configured, disable the service and set the vscan property off on the shares.
