Symptoms

The messages were initially reported for Memory Risers/DIMMs. With the exception of the FANBD messages, these messages are benign and do not require hardware replacement.

Some examples include the following:

Prior to 7.2.8 firmware revision.

IPMI |minor : "ID = 1fb : 04/12/2010 : 10:27:42 : Entity Presence : /HDD5/PRSNT : Device Present"

After 7.2.8 firmware upgrade.

"Hot removal of /SYS/MB/RISER2/PCIE2/F20CARD"
"Hot removal of /SYS/MB/CMP0/BR1/CH1/D0"
"Hot insertion of /SYS/MB/CMP0/BR1/CH1/D0"

Dec 18 05:03:48: Chassis |major : "Host is running"
Dec 24 16:14:08: Chassis |major : "Hot removal of /SYS/MB/CMP0/BR1/CH1/D0"
Dec 24 16:14:19: Chassis |major : "Hot insertion of /SYS/MB/CMP0/BR1/CH1/D0"

Thu Feb 11 01:01:37 2010 Chassis Log major >CPU1: throttling to 1/1
Thu Feb 11 01:01:26 2010 Chassis Log major >CPU1 too hot: throttling to 1/2

There have also been reports of messages related to Fan Boards.

Jan 11 09:51:41: Chassis |major : "Hot removal of /SYS/FANBD0/FM1"
Jan 11 09:51:52: Chassis |major : "Hot insertion of /SYS/FANBD0/FM1"

The above messages may be related to CR 6925325. The guidance for the FANBD messages:
If this issue is seen frequently the fan boards and the connector (paddle) board need to be replaced.

Cause

The issues are the result of incomplete I2C reads triggering a warning from ILOM.  The system uses I2C to confirm presence of devices and when a poll read fails the code does not retry to confirm but sends out a removal message, on the next polling cycle the read completed and the device is "discovered" and a 'hot insertion' message is printed.

Solution

For hot insertion / hot removal messages pertaining to memory or CPU throttling messages, the fix is obtained in firmware 7.2.10.a and later.

If fan related messages are seen frequently, please refer to Oracle Support for review.
