Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

In some cases it has been observed that a disk drive replacement of a faulty drive has caused following message upon insertion of a replacement disk drive on their NAS:

The disk 'serial number  HDD xx ' uses an interface (SAS) that is incompatible with the enclosure. Major Defect

The new disk that has been insert remains unavailable and there has been no re-silvering activity at all.

The drive remains faulted state and the pool Degraded

This can happen with older code but this document covers the latest 2010 Q3.4.2 code with 3R53 SIM firmware and applies to the SAS-1 versions of the product 7410 and 7310

Changes

The Drive reports as a SAS device instead of a SATA device when the software tries to add the drive

Cause

The Drive reports as a SAS device instead of a SATA device for the NAS while the S7310 adn S7410 only support SATA drives installed in the JBoD.

Solution

Before assuming theres a DOA disk please check that any SIMS are online and that both paths are seen to the JBODS.

Also check SIM firmware is the latest level for 2010Q3.4, which is 3R53. If the software and SIM firmware is below that version try to schedule a maintenance window for a software update.

If the system software and the SIM firmware is the level proposed or newer, the you could try one of the steps below, which might require involvement of an Oracle System Support engineer remotely accessing the system.
  • Attempt a restart of sysevent.d
  • Reboot of the system if possible
  • Replace the new disk with a new spare part
First an attempt should be made to bring the disk drive online instead of ordering a new replacement disk drive. If a reboot is not appropriate restarting the sysevent.d should be tried at least. This requires remote access by an Oracle System Engineer as this cannot be done from CLI or BUI.
Only as a last stand a new order for a replacement disk should be placed, but this could also fail and then a reboot is the last action to take.
