The upload of a Appliance Kit software release via ftp to a Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System fails with timeout errors on the CLI.

Transferred 696M of 703M (99%) ... failed
error: download failed: FTP response timeout

Cause

<Bug: 7070586> "Upgrade image download fails when ftp transfer lasts more than 60 seconds"
The cause for this limitation of the Appliance Kit Software is known and is related to following items
  • This is a known limitation of Curl 7.20.0.
  • All version of Appliance Kit software of revision 2010.Q3 or before are affected
  • FTP timeouts after file transferred completely (though the download is complete libcurl gets timed out)
Note that this will affect upgrades to any release, if done over a relatively slow network until a software release containing the fix has been installed.

Solution

Implemented Fix

Since 2011.1 uses libcurl 7.21.1 an upgrade to Software release 2011.1 or later will implement a fix for this timeout issue and it should not be observed any longer.

Workaround:

As a workaround it is recommended to use HTTP instead of FTP. With HTTP you have the choice between CLI or BUI for uploading the Appliance Kit Software.

For TSC engineers only:
If customer is not able to use HTTP for what ever reason, on the Wiki pages there is a procedure for manual update of the Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System, please refer to
