Created from <SR 3-5211884731>

Applies to:

Oracle Database Appliance - Version: Not Applicable to Not Applicable - Release: N/A to N/A
Linux x86-64

Symptoms

For ODA version 2.1.0.2.0 and lower, the ODA CPUs are performing 4x slower than the very similar Exadata X2-2 CPUs.

Following query gives CPUSPEEDNW around 650 : expected results should be around 2700.

SQL>select PVAL1 from aux_stats$ where pname="CPUSPEEDNW";

Also: Slow performance of OneCommand patching has also been reported.

Changes

None known

Cause

This is unpublished Bug 13472359, "LNX64-112-CMT: POOR CPU PERFORMANCE ON DATABASE APPLIANCE"

Solution

Upgrade to OAK 2.1.0.3.0, aka <Patch 13622348>, which includes BIOS fixes to clear IA32_CLOCK_MODULATION, which improves the CPU performance.

As noted in the README file for <Patch 13622348>, you will be applying the Patch for the BIOS / CPU first

Testing of the BIOS fix has resulted in the following improvements:

1) Patching duration may be reduced by 30% or more
2) Some CPU and Streams benchmarks may improve as much 2.5x up to 5x
3) Parsing time can improve up to 4x
4) The osysmond can improved up to 5x times faster
5) Log buffer write and syncs should improve
6) Initial deployment takes only 52 minutes
