Applies to:

Sun StorageTek SL8500 Modular Library System - Version: Not Applicable to Not Applicable - Release: N/A to N/A
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

The robot is not able to fetch a tape from a particular cell.  Repeated fetch retries fail as well and the tape appears to be stuck in the cell.

Result code 5010
RC5010
Robot operation failed.

Cause

There is a problem with the cell array that caused the tape to get stuck in the cell.
There could also be a problem with the cartridge's case or leader block.

Solution

1.  When a robot fails to fetch a tape stuck in a cell, and the robot becomes inoperative either due to a
"servo mech reach" error or a "reach not safe" error, the LSM will have to be offlined prior to initiating
      recovery procedures.

2.  Determine the robot and source cell addresses from the servo mech reach event error message.  The
identifier of the stuck tape will also be in one of the error messages.  Identify the rail and LSM affected
     by the reach errors.

3.  Inform the customer that the rail will have to be reset and the associated LSM will have to be
varied offline to the host.  ( The customer may have to schedule a short down time. )

4.  After the LSM has been varied offline, the field engineer should reset the rail through the HBS switch
at the back of the library.

5.  If resetting the rail fails to recover and put away the tape, review the event log error messages and
check for rail and/or robot reset failure errors.

6.  Should the tape remain stuck, the field engineer will have to go inside the library, manually take the tape
out from the cell and examine both the  tape and the cell for possible problems.  Run diagnostic tests
     on the robot, as well.

7.  Verify if the rail and robot comes back up.  Vary the LSM online to the host.
