Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

Customer has complained to us that they are getting error accessing a particular tape.
Looking in ACSLS, that volume (A00177) is not found, but all the others in sequence from AA00170 to AA0180 are found.

'greplog -i A00177 acsss_event.log' shows:

Volume A00177 deleted, home cell was none, drive was 0, 0, 0, 0

Cause

Tape cartridge was found unloaded in tape drive.
Too long of a delay rewinding the tape.

Solution

The tape may be in the system cell area; if that is the case it will require manual recovery.

Recommend:
From SL Console: Tools/Reports/Cartridge Summary
-Search for the target tape and note its location.
-If it is in the system cells; use RcvrMove <recovery move> in the Diagnostic menu and place the tape in the
 CAP.
-Once retrieved from the CAP do a host CAP enter to re-enter the tape.

If the tape is not in the system area and is found in the customer area run a host audit to update the location of the tape.
=======================================================================

When a drive fail and it looses communication with the library on the TTI interface it can happen the tape is marked as "absent" by ACSLS.

- absent

The cartridge cannot be located in the library.  All recorded locations for the cartridge have been searched, and the cartridge is not in any of them. The information about the cartridge is retained.  If the cartridge is found or re-entered into the library (before the retention period expires), it is reactivated.
The default volume_retention_period for a volser in ACSLS is five days.  Nothing was apparently attempted to recover the cartridg,e this is why the cartridge was DELETED by ACSLS fives days later at the end of the retention period.

These robotic errors in ACSLS log came from the library.  Suggest you to look for corresponding error messages in SL8500 eventlog EWI and start work from there.
