Symptoms

The network connection keeps getting set to half duplex

To discuss this information further with Oracle experts and industry peers, we encourage you to review, join or start a discussion in the My Oracle Support Community - 7000 Series ZFS Appliances

Cause

It is likely that the switch is not set to auto-negotiation.

It is also possible that there could be a broken cable or NIC port.

Solution

Set the devices at both ends of the network link to auto-negotiate.

When a device set to auto-negotiation is connected to a device that is not using auto-negotiation, the auto-negotiation process fails. The auto-negotiating end of the connection is still able to correctly detect the speed of the other end, but cannot correct the duplex mode. The standard requires the use of half duplex in these conditions. Therefore, the auto-negotiating end of the connection uses half duplex while its peer is locked at full duplex, and this is a duplex mismatch.

As there is no configuration setting available on the Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System to set the half or full duplex, the best solution is to enable auto-negotiation on the switch.
