Symptoms

There is no option to set a 4 GigaByte  T10000A drive into FICON mode.

Changes

Microcode removed this option for 4 GB drives.

Cause

T10000A drives FICON mode was only tested and designed to be used for 2 GB drives. It will cause intermittent interface errors when a 4 GB drive was used in FICON environments. A code change was put into 1.40. xxx code to remove the FICON mode option for 4 GB capable drives. 

Solution

Order a 2GB drive for any FICON T10000A spare drive if one is needed.
