To make aware that if 3 x PSUs are marked as failed on M8000/M9000 that this may not be an issue with the Power Supply Units or the Power Backplane and is most likely an issue with the input feed or a failed ACS.

Sun SPARC Enterprise M9000-64 Server - Version: Not Applicable to Not Applicable - Release: N/A to N/A
Sun SPARC Enterprise M8000 Server - Version: Not Applicable to Not Applicable   [Release: N/A to N/A]
Sun SPARC Enterprise M9000-32 Server - Version: Not Applicable to Not Applicable   [Release: N/A to N/A]

Symptoms

3 x Power Supply Units (PSUs) failed on M8000/M9000 running on single phase power. This does not affect 3 phase power inputs as PSUs are controlled individually.

Changes

ACS failure, Customers input feed has no power or the breaker switch is off.

Cause

When a M8000 or M9000 system with single phase power has 3 x PSUs failed  like below.

    PSU#40 Status:Normal; Serial:FA0838V475;
        + FRU-Part-Number:CA01022-0690 16H  /371-2219-08   ;
        + Power_Status:Input fail;
    PSU#41 Status:Normal; Serial:FA0838V510;
        + FRU-Part-Number:CA01022-0690 16H  /371-2219-08   ;
        + Power_Status:Input fail;
    PSU#42 Status:Normal; Serial:FA0842W950;
        + FRU-Part-Number:CA01022-0690 16H  /371-2219-08   ;
        + Power_Status:Input fail;

This can be caused by a input feed to the cabinet failing or a failed AC section (ACS)

To explain this correctly each input feed of the ACS powers 3 power back plane connectors, these can be on different back planes.

If you are seeing the following then the breaker on the ACS has been switched off.

    PSU#40 Status:Normal; Serial:FA06373786;
        + FRU-Part-Number:CA01022-0690 10G  /371-2219-07   ;
        + Power_Status:Breaker off;
    PSU#41 Status:Normal; Serial:FA06374281;
        + FRU-Part-Number:CA01022-0690 10G  /371-2219-07   ;
        + Power_Status:Breaker off;
    PSU#42 Status:Normal; Serial:FA06374236;
        + FRU-Part-Number:CA01022-0690 10G  /371-2219-07   ;
        + Power_Status:Breaker off;

i.e.

M8000 Uses ACS_A (3 input feeds)
-----------------------------------
PSU       | ACS input
-----------------------
0,1,2     | 0 (bottom of main power ACS)
3,4,5     | 1 (middle of main power ACS)
6,7,8     | 2 (top of main power ACS)
40,41,42  | 20 (right hand side of dual power ACS)
43,44,45  | 21 (Middle of dual power ACS)
46,47,48  | 22 (left hand side of dual power ACS)

M9000 Uses ACS_B (5 input feeds)
-----------------------------------
PSU       | ACS input
-----------------------
0,1,2     | 0 (Left of main power ACS)
3,4,5     | 1 (2nd from Left of main power ACS)
6,7,8     | 2 (Center of main power ACS)
9,10,11   | 3 (2nd from Right of main power ACS)
12,13,14  | 4 (Right of main power ACS)
40,41,42  | 20 (bottom of dual power ACS)
43,44,45  | 21 (2nd from bottom of dual power ACS)
46,47,48  | 22 (center of dual power ACS)
49,50,51  | 23 (2nd from top of dual power ACS)
52,53,54  | 24 (top of dual power ACS)

M9000 Second Cabinet Uses ACS_B (5 input feeds)
---------------------------------------------
PSU       | ACS input
-----------------------
20,21,22  | 10 (Left of main power ACS)
23,24,25  | 11 (2nd from Left of main power ACS)
26,27,28  | 12 (Center of main power ACS)
29,30,31  | 13 (2nd from Right of main power ACS)
32,33,34  | 14 (Right of main power ACS)
60,61,62  | 30 (bottom of dual power ACS)
63,64,65  | 31 (2nd from bottom of dual power ACS)
66,67,68  | 32 (center of dual power ACS)
69,70,71  | 33 (2nd from top of dual power ACS)
72,73,74  | 34 (top of dual power ACS)

Solution

Customer needs to check there is power at the input feed and that the switch on the ACS is switched on.

If these are confirmed to be ok then the ACS would need to be replaced.
