IBM z/OS on System z

Symptoms

VTCS software messages:

SLS6698I  ECAM I/O ERROR ON VTD XXXX

SLS5079E  MOUNT OF 999999 ON XXXX - FAILED (12) - MVC:999999 ECAM ERROR CC=255 RC=16

IBM messages:

IOS102I DEVICE XXXX BOXED, OPERATOR REQUEST

IOS000I XXXX,**,SIM,**,**06,,**,,YYYYYY

Cause

The cause is determined to be due to a mainframe operator using the host system command with the FORCE parameter to vary offline the VSM VTDs while in use, thereby taking the host paths offline.

Note:  This system command may have been executed hours prior to the occurrence of the SLS6698I and SLS5079E messages.

Use of  VARY device,OFFLINE,FORCE system command should be used cautiously with consent. The consequences are the devices being boxed, all I/O operations in progress terminated, all I/O requests rejected as errors, and potential data integrity issues. Refer to the IBM manual titled MVS System Commands for further information regarding the force parameter associated with the vary command.

Solution

Recommendation: Use device VARY ONLINE to recover the device.  Refer to the IBM manual titled MVS System Commands for further information regarding the vary command.
