Applies to:

Sun Fire T2000 Server - Version Not Applicable and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

The number of all errors increased for a disk drive (even if that drive has been hot-swapped)

Changes

For example, if iostat reports the following:

sd1 Soft Errors: 10 Hard Errors: 15 Transport Errors: 1
Vendor: FUJITSU Product: MAY2073RCSUN72G Revision: 0401 Serial No: 0620S02N4N
Size: 73.41GB <73407865856 bytes>
Media Error: 13 Device Not Ready: 0 No Device: 2 Recoverable: 10
Illegal Request: 0 Predictive Failure Analysis: 0
sd3 Soft Errors: 39 Hard Errors: 29 Transport Errors: 25
Vendor: FUJITSU Product: MAY2073RCSUN72G Revision: 0401 Serial No: 0621S033WS
Size: 73.41GB <73407865856 bytes>
Media Error: 25 Device Not Ready: 0 No Device: 4 Recoverable: 39
Illegal Request: 0 Predictive Failure Analysis: 0

and the number of errors increases when a later output is retrieved (note that for this example the drive has been hot-swapped and the system hasn't been rebooted, thus the number of errors hasn't been reset in iostat):

sd1 Soft Errors: 19 Hard Errors: 71 Transport Errors: 38
Vendor: FUJITSU Product: MAY2073RCSUN72G Revision: 0401 Serial No: 0620S02N4N
Size: 73.41GB <73407865856 bytes>
Media Error: 61 Device Not Ready: 0 No Device: 10 Recoverable: 19
Illegal Request: 0 Predictive Failure Analysis: 0
sd3 Soft Errors: 39 Hard Errors: 29 Transport Errors: 25
Vendor: FUJITSU Product: MAY2073RCSUN72G Revision: 0401 Serial No: 0621S033WS
Size: 73.41GB <73407865856 bytes>
Media Error: 25 Device Not Ready: 0 No Device: 4 Recoverable: 39
Illegal Request: 0 Predictive Failure Analysis: 0

Cause

There is a missing patch affecting the drive that is causing the disk to show an increasing number of errors.

Solution

  • Please check if the disk has a downrev firmware and update it to its latest version (TSEs can use Explominer or another similar tool)

The missing patch for the example was the following:
124232-03 Hardware 72GB SAS Disk Drive Patch: Download program and SAS Disk Drive firmware

  • If the disk drives already have all their patches/firmware updated, please consider replacing the disk or escalate the issue to the appropriate team.
