Solution Type Problem Resolution Sure Solution 1338403.1 : SL3000 FC connected Host - HBA Change Impacts on SL3000 FC Partitioning
In this Document
Applies to:Sun StorageTek SL3000 Modular Library System - Version: Not ApplicableInformation in this document applies to any platform. SymptomsCustomer replaced an HBA in server and now the server cannot connect to partition on FC SL3000, but can still see the tape drives. The customer has tried a reconfigure boot, but without success. ChangesCustomer replaced an HBA in their server.CauseThe SL3000 uses the WWPN of the host HBA to identify which partition it should be talking with. Change the HBA and you have a different WWPN on this host and the Partitioned SL3000 will not allow it to see any partitions until it is reconfigured back onto the SL3000.SolutionBackground information: A partitioned SL3000 uses the WWPN of the host server to identify which host it is and which partition that it should be attached to. This WWPN is configured at the time of creating the original partition information. It is entered manually to allow the SL3000 to communicate with multiple hosts over the same FC connection but to enable only those hosts to control only the partition that they have been configured to see. Changes may also need to be made to the customers FC switch SAN zoning to include the new WWPN if they are zoning by WWN. It is usual to configure only one host into a zone with multiple targets ( Drives and libraries) in the same FC SAN zone. 1. Change the WWPN on the SL3000 partition that is accessed by the affected host to reflect the new WWPN to restore access. Go to SL3000 USER MANUAL and search for "Modify FC-SCSI Host-Partition Connection Detail" and follow the instructions. 2. Proactive Planning: It will be noted in the SL3000 Installation Manual and the SL3000 USER GUIDE that they stress the need to understand and document the partitioning of the library and for that information to be available to all. Extracts to encourage proactive planning: SL3000 Installation Manual Essential for Partitioning are: Clear communication among the system administrators, programmers and partition owners. Accurate knowledge of what partitions exist and the owners and boundaries of each partition. The number of cartridge slots activated on the library and how many slots are configured for each partition. A clearly written and drawn plan for how the library will be partitioned. 316194401AD SL3000 USERS GUIDE E20875_01 SL3000 March 2011.pdf Partition Planning The partitioning feature offers great flexibility in the use of your library. It also requires careful planning, a thorough knowledge of library wall and storage cell mapping, and expertise in configuring and administering host software applications. There must be clear communication among all parties involved, including system programmers and administrators, library operators, and your Oracle service representative.
