Solution Type Problem Resolution Sure Solution 1338173.1 : VTL - Failed To Expand Virtual Tape Id Virtual Tape
In this Document Created from <SR 3-3756393856>
Applies to:Sun StorageTek VTL Plus Storage Appliance - Version: 1.0 - Build 1323 to 2.0 - Build 1656 - Release: 1.0 to 2.0Information in this document applies to any platform. SymptomsError message shows up in the vtl error logs saying that tape expansion failed, followed by ioctl time out error:
Jun 1 06:58:18 xxxxxxvtl08 sanidmgr[1007]: [ID 702911 daemon.notice] IPSTOR||0||E||0x00009c85||cannot expand tape||11323||-1

And then after few minutes message comes up in the log file saying that the tape gets expanded successfully:
Jun 1 06:59:27 xxxxxxvtl08 ipstorcomm: [ID 702911 daemon.notice] IPSTOR||1306925967||I||0x00002cef||expanded virtual tape||VIRTUAL TAPE id 11323||7168
Jun 1 06:59:28 xxxxxxvtl08 genunix: [ID 459543 kern.notice] <6>[fffffe80020d1c80] TLE_INFO: Tape 11323 Expanded successfully, new size 20401094656 bytes
CauseThe tape expand failed is due to the ioctl time out, this is not related to the shrinking time out previously. The ioctl time out is not a real issue. As long as the tape expanded successfully afterwards in couple minutes, it should not cause issue on the tape. The ioctl time out happens sometime when the downstream storage is busy on updating the tape information.SolutionThis error can be ignored, as long as the subsequent tape expansion for that same tape was successful (see Symptom section above for sample messages for verifying).Attachments This solution has no attachment |
