Sun StorageTek SL3000 Modular Library System - Version: Not Applicable and later   [Release: N/A and later ]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

Manual Clean not Incrementing Use Count

Cause

Unlike the SL500, the SL3000 does not have a Manual Cleaning option in the SLConsole when using AutoClean.

Solution

Manual cleans can only be accomplished by using a Diagnostic Move command from the SLConsole.  When using a cleaning tape in this manual manner, the "use count" of the cleaning tape will not increment.  This is known behavior and there is no current plan to modify it.

NOTE: Manual cleaning will have no effect on many drives if the transport is not in a "clean requested" state.  In addition, routine manual cleans can have detrimental effects such as decreased head life. Engineering recommends that cleaning should be done only when a transports requests a clean.
