System is running S10 U5 or earlier and following the Install.info file from the patch.

When booting from OBP to carry out the upgrade it fails as below:

Rebooting with command: boot disk /flash-update-SunFire245

Boot device: /pci@1e,600000/pci@0/pci@a/pci@0/pci@8/scsi@1/disk@0,0:a File and args: /flash-update-SunFire245

Cause

The Solaris system was running S10 U4 but had kernel Patch 137137-09 installed, this patch implements boot archive support and this causes the system at boot time to look for alternate kernel's to boot from the boot archive and because the file flash-update-SunFire245 cannot be found in there this causes the boot failure seen.

Solution

From the Install.info instructions file in the patch ensure you follow section 4) b) instructions in the patch to put the flash-update file into the boot archive:-

# echo flash-update* >> /boot/solaris/filelist.ramdisk
# bootadm update-archive
