Microsoft Word offers you the functionality to "share open" the documents and it prompts you if another user is using. This does not correctly work if Internet Explorer's zone setting is not correct. It happens with Microsoft Word 2010, without a Sharepoint Server.

Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System (generic)

Symptoms

When using Microsoft Office 2010, users will be prompted to chose an option to edit a document as if the document is currently used by another person on the network.  This does not work correctly due to incorrect Internet Explorer security setting and is not related with ACL settings on a Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System:.

Note:
  1. This does not apply if Sharepoint server is running.  According to Microsoft documents, Word will talk to Sharepoint server for exclusive locks.
  2. Though this is found on Word 2010, it may apply to Word 2007 and other Office products like Excel, which uses the same mechanism for locking.

Reproduction of problem

  1. User A opens a Word document on Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System whose IP address is not yet in the Internet Explorer (IE) "trusted zone".
  2. Word will open this document in "Protected View" mode.
  3. Press "Enable Editing" to go into edit mode, change document an save it. As user A exits the document, Word will leave a temporary file on Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System, which works as "lock" file for this shared document.
  4. The above lock file causes next user to be prompted to chose options to edit the document though the file is not actually open at the time.

Cause

Internet Explorer provides extra security features based on the IP address or subnet organized in zones and relates them with concepts of trusted relationship on the top of standard SMB ACL. While SMB ACL can be set to Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System, subnet based security is not controlled from trough means configurable from the appliance. The necessary configuration changes need to be done on the client side, means Microsoft Windows or Internet Explorer.

Solution

Change configuration of Internet Explorer by adding the IP address of Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System to "trusted zone".
