Symptoms

AMD Based Server Blades fail to power up after the ILOM/BIOS has been upgraded.
*  The Sun Fire X6220 was used in this case.  
*  This applies to AMD based servers with on board LSI controller.

Changes

In this situation, the ILOM/BIOS is upgraded, and the server will not power up with disks in the slots.
As the LSI firmware is deemed to be out of sync, we must observe in the firmware release notes, the supported version of ILOM, BIOS and LSI firmware.

Cause

When the ILOM/BIOS of the server is upgraded without upgrading the LSI firmware, the blade will not be able to power up until the disks are first removed from the slots before the server/blade can be powered on.

Solution

In this situation, remove all the disks in the slots first.

Once the server is powered on, the LSI firmware will need to be upgraded.
Note: The location and method of upgrading the firmware would depend on the model of server.

A power off (disconnect from power source) is required after the LSI firmware upgrade. As in this SR in question, a power off of the blade initiated from the SP did not get the blade to power on with disks in slots.

A complete power reset is required to complete the LSI firmware upgrade.

For blades, powering off can be done with the WebBUI and unplugging it from the chassis for a complete power off.

LSI Firmware Installation Procedure:

Most of the LSI firmware is packaged in ISO format.
An example would be FW12700_B62600.iso which is from EIS DVD or MOS. (where FW is the version of firmware 1.27.00 and B is the BIOS version 6.26.00)

In order to read the iso image, you have to utilize the ILOM redirection. The web based procedure is selected from the following meaning sequence: (From ILOM WebBUI: Remote Control -> Redirection -> Launch Redirection, under ILOM Remote Console -> Devices -> CDROM image, please refer to screenshots).

To enable the server to boot from CDROM on the next reboot, you select the following sequence in the ILOM WebBUI: 9Remote Control -> Host Control -> Next Boot Device and select CDROM or ipmitool -I lan -H <SP IP> -U root chassis bootdev cdrom0.

To update the LSI firmware once the CDROM image has booted up (Banner shows the new firmware/BIOS version), select 1 for firmware update, and it will perform an upgrade on the firmware BIOS.

Once ,it is finished, an DOS prompt is returned.
At this point, power off the server, including unplugging the power cord to complete the update.
