Symptoms

VTL is not allowing all available space to be used
Not all usable space available
It is believed that 160TB storage should be available on a VTL with 170TB raw, customer sees ~120TB.

Cause

Actual usable space is approximately 25-30% less than the available raw storage.

Solution

Actual usable space is approximately 25-30% less than the available raw storage
This is expected. For example, with 170TB raw and 160TB usable disk array storage,
VTL only shows 120TB. R5 parity, hot spares, and the fact that disk manufacturers
round up on disk size to 500GB reduces available storage by 30%. Engineering provided
the 30% estimate and it is very close to what the customer sees.
