Applies to:

Sun StorageTek VSM System - Version: 4 to 5C - Release: 4.0 to 5.0
IBM z/OS on System z

Symptoms

The following z/OS host informational messages may be issued during periods of high VTD (virtual tape drive) activity on the VTSS or other circumstances:

IOS071I xxxx,xx,SLS0, MISSING CHANNEL AND DEVICE END
IOS000I xxxx,**,SIM,**,**06,,**,S3=GTA,SLS0
IOS071I xxxx,**,xxxxxxxx, START PENDING
SLS6698I ECAM I/O error on VTD xxxx

Note:  SLS messages are issued by VTCS software.

Changes

Verify the MIH, missing interrupt handler, is set to 20:00 minutes or more.  Issue this host system command:
D IOS MIH, DEV=(xxxx)
-where xxxx is the tape drive address.

If this MIH setting is 20:00 or more,  then investigate further.

Cause

One explanation related to the VSM could be:
During a timeframe of high VTD (virtual tape drive) activity, one or more LPARs may not receive adequate services if another LPAR is prioritized and creates a heavy workload on the VTSS.

Solution

If the cause is determined to be due to high VTD activity during a specific timeframe, then a system administrator may decide to reschedule peak workloads to the VTSS.

Further investigation may be warranted for VTCS SLSxxxxx ECAM messages or hardware.

Note:  Multiple missing channel end messages on a specific tape drive or RTD (real tape drive) with various tapes may indicate a tape drive hardware problem.
