Cause

Additional Information
The Customer install team running "Security Hardening Scripts" on the Sun machine where SL Console is being installed.

They found SL Console was failing when writing to /dev/null file.
If the workstation does not have a display, then the operating system configuration on that system probably does not have an Xwindows layer.

The installer and SL Console itself are both graphics applications and require a windowing system.

A couple of items to try:

  1. Make sure the customer runs "xhost +" on the client workstation that they are working from.
  2. Log on to the remote workstation and set 'DISPLAY' and then execute "xterm" from the remote workstation shell.
  3. If an xterm window does not appear on the client workstation, then there is something configured incorrectly on either the Client Operating System or the Remote Workstation Operating System.

A headless work station is a server without a monitor or keyboard. It usually interfaces with a remote work station that has the monitor and keyboard.

Solution

Modify the permissions on /dev/null file that were changed by the 'Security Hardening Scripts' and then install the SL Console software.
