Symptoms
Troubleshooting steps for Sun[TM] Ultra 45 workstations with XVR-100, XVR-2500 or XVR-300 graphics cards that may have problems with no video output or incorrect video colors.

Resolution
Before replacing a Video card there are some checks that should be done.
For No Video output-

Make sure that the monitor is be plugged into power and turned on
1- Check that the Video cable is connected correctly. Remove the cable and check the connector pins on the cable and the connector on the video card for signs of damage. If damage is seen replace the damaged component. If there is no damage then reconnect the cable making sure that it is fully seated and secure.

2- The default video port is the one closest to the motherboard (XVR-100, XVR-300, XVR-2500). On the XVR-100 the console is only supported on the VGA video output (HD-15 connector). There is no console support on the DVI video output. To be able to see console output the system needs to be connected to the HD-15 (blue) connector on the XVR-100 and not the DVI (white) connector.
O n XVR-300 the console is only available on the video
output closest to the motherboard labeled "Port 1" on the
splitter cable DVI connector

3- There is a small chance that the OBP has been directed to the tty port or some other device. eeprom should show output-device=screen and input-device=keyboard.
This can be checked by reseting the NVRAM Temporarily using these steps:

  • Power on the workstation and wait until the front panel Power button LED begins to flash.
  • Quickly press the front panel Power button twice while the led is flashing (similar to the way you would double-click a mouse). Is OK prompt now displayed?

What is output/input_device set to?

4-Turn the monitor off, then turn the monitor back on.
The small light on the front of the monitor should be amber or green.

4a- Try moving the Video card to another slot

5- Connect a terminal to ttya to see if the system is encountering POST failures. If you can access the system via the serial port check the NVRAM settings to confirm that the input-device and output-device are set correctly. (if we want the console on the video card they should be set to "keyboard" and "screen" respectively)

5a- Remove the keyboard and mouse and see what messages appear
on the serial console. The serial console is the default console
when no mouse or keyboard is connected.

For incorrect screen colors or distorted output-
These issues are typically caused by bad video cables. We recommend Sun video cables. Non-Sun video cables may be poor quality and can give problems from NO video to bad video.
