Symptoms
The gFiler from NetApps connecting to the SE9980V can not release the
persistent SCSI reservation on the LUNs created on the G-Filer through
Storage Navigator if the G-Filer has been deinstalled and disconnected from
the SE9980V.

Resolution
No fix at this time.

NetAPPs is aware of this issue and the bug will be fixed with new code.
No schedule for the new code was released yet.

Relief/Workaround
There are two workarounds. The first one is to perform a selective LUN
re-format without effecting the other LUNs on the raid group. To execute
this operation will cause data loss and possible system crash. Therefore
the password is required for this operation. The reference manual is
SVP02-700 and the following is the cheatsheet to format the LUNs:
1. Select [Maintenance] from the SVP window
2. Select [Logical Device] from the Maintenance window.
3. Select [Detail].
4. Select [Format].
5. Enter password and select [OK].
6. "Formatting the logical device..." is displayed.
7. Select [OK] when "Formatting was finished" is displayed.
8. Select [Close].
The second one is to install and to configure a gFiler on the
SE9980V. This method was recommended by the Hitachi support center.
One needs to obtain the gFiler WWN (name service of switch)
and enter it into the host group of the gFiler on the SE9980V.
Then present these LUNs to the new gFile. The gFiler needs to
release the LUNs after it connects to the switch and starts up.
The Storage Navigator will then be able to remove these LUNs.

Comment: I have added the comments regarding the possible data loss
and system crash due to this serious format LUN operation.
Cheatsheet for formatting LUN is added.

I have talked to the local HDS technical staffs more about the
second alternative which came from the HDS Support Center and added the details into this doc.

Please review and comment. Thanks for your kind assistance.

Comment: Joe,

You list 2 workarounds:
There are two ways to solve this issue. One way is to perform a
select LUN format without effecting the other LUNs on the raid group.

The second way is to install and to configure a new G-Filer on the HDS 9980.
Make sure the WWN matching the new G-Filer. Then present these LUNs to the
new G-Filer. The Storage Navigator will be able to remove these LUNs.

The first is understandable. Please just add a disclaimer that data will be destroyed (this may be well known, but just to be on the safe side). The second workaround I am a bit confused about. Is this a realistic workaround for many customers? Is this saying that if they have another Netapps box free, to attach that? And when you say make sure the WWN matches, are you talking about the WWN of the HDS ports or the G-filer?

Please clarfiy a bit and resubmit. Thanks

Comment: To Whom It May Concern:

A customer found out this bug and reported to us. The database
from channelone.hds.com did not supply the answer and the
HDS engineer found out the from the NetApps engineer.

Please review and comment. Thanks for your kind assistance.
