Symptoms

The following error may occur when trying to boot a Sun Enteprise 10000 domain from the network:
waiting for ARP ...

Cause

Usually this is due to improper setting for booting from the network.

Solution

The following procedure will help you bring up the domain over the network.

Set up the boot server on the SSP:
---------------------------------

  1. On SSP: # domain_switch <domain_name>
  2. # bringup -A off
  3. Open netcon session to domain.
  4. Make sure you have 2.6 CD-ROM local on SSP.
  5. # /cdrom/sol_2_6_sparc_smcc_svr/s0/Solaris_2.6/Tools/rm_install_client <domain_name>
  6. #/cdrom/sol_2_6_sparc_smcc_svr/s0/Solaris_2.6/Tools/add_install_client <domain_name> sun4u1 (Please Note that the CD-ROM has to be local on the SSP since the boot image will still reside on the CD-ROM)
  7. # vi /etc/ethers -> add/check MAC address and e10k domainname; if you do not know MAC address type "banner" in netcon session at the doamin's ok prompt or sysid -d ***
  8. # vi /etc/hosts -> add e10k domainname and ip address
  9. Check /tfptboot/.
  10. Verify data in /etc/bootparams file for domain.
  11. boot net -s (in domain netcon).

Troubleshooting if it still does not boot:
-----------------------------------------

  1. snoop -d <ifname> <domain_name>
  2. watch-net-all at ok prompt of domain
  3. On ssp check /export/home/ssp/.postrc for errors. (/export/install is for permanent bootserver installation only)
  4. Check to make sure the CD-ROM was shared correctly. ssp# share -F nfs -o ro,anon=0 /cdrom/cdrom0/s0
