Symptoms

Affected HDDs can begin to experience excessive BER (bit error rate) beginning between 500 and 700 power-on hours and will eventually fail. Continued operation will cause the loss of service.

Impact

This issue will manifest as an HDD failure due to an HDD defective top-cover which allows contamination of the HDD heads.

Changes

Contributing Factors

This quality issue was found and reported by the drive supplier and is related to specific Seagate drive serial numbers.

Cause

Issue with one manufacturer of the top cover for the Seagate 300GB and 600GB Compass HDDs, and was reported by our vendor as a result of failures found during their ORT (Ongoing Reliability Testing).  “Metalform” top cover is defective, will allow contamination into the HDD, and ultimately result in HDD failures. Services Logistics received none of these impacted drives, however GSAP 5748 was published to address return of defected drives under warranty to Seagate.

Drives shipped in January and February of 2012 are impacted.

Solution

Target Completion Date: 31-October-2012

Workaround

No workaround available – see resolution section below.

Resolution

Please review this entire knowledge article prior to starting any remediation activities.  Duration of time to replace and resync drives depends on the storage configuration, but approximately 1 hour per 300GBs is a reasonable estimate.

Proactively, or upon failure, replace all affected disk drives as identified in the Customer List.  Customer Lists are being managed by, and available from, the Regional FCO Drivers listed below.

  APAC  - Alvin Lim
  Japan - Toshiyuki Takahashi
  EMEA  - Mike Netz
  LATAM - Marcos Omura
  NAMER - Dennis Cairns

Only Seagate drives (with bare drive part numbers 390-0490 or 390-0491) should be replaced where their drive serial number(s) are found in the attached Serial Number report or as listed in GSAP 5748.

  Proactively replace affected drive p/n 542-0287 with p/n 542-0287.
  Proactively replace affected drive p/n 542-0384 with p/n 542-0384.
  Proactively replace affected drive p/n 542-0387 with p/n 542-0387.
  Proactively replace affected drive p/n 542-0388 with p/n 542-0388.
  Proactively replace affected drive p/n 542-0287 with p/n 542-0287.
  Proactively replace affected drive p/n 540-7903 with 540-7903 or 7012771.
  Proactively replace affected drive p/n 7012771 with 7012771.

A “Customer Ready” document is attached to this knowledge article which can be provided to customers upon request.

 Identification of Affected Parts (how to)

1. For the following platforms; SPARC Enterprise T5120,SPARC T3 orSPARC T4 use the following command for drive serial number(s);

# iostat -E | grep Serial

The factory ships with ZFS mirrored drives, so if one fails the other should still work. If the customer wants/needs to reload they could use a jumpstart equivalent or download an ISO from the below URL;

  http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/indexes/downloads/index.html

2. For affected Sun Netra platforms use the following command for drive serial number(s);

# iostat -E | grep Serial

ISO Download from the below URL;

  http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/indexes/downloads/index.html

3. For affected Sun Fire and Sun Blade platforms use the following command for drive serial number(s);

 # megacli -PDInfo -a0 (LSI command - OS has to be running)

 Software or OS can be downloaded from the following location;

  http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/indexes/downloads/index.html

4. For SPARC Enterprise 4000/5000 platforms use the following command for drive serial number(s);

 # iostat -En

See example output from this command below.

5. For Exadata (X4170 M2) use the following command for drive serial number(s);

DB Nodes running Linux:
[root@edx22bur09db01 ~]# /opt/MegaRAID/MegaCli/MegaCli64 -pdlist -a0 | grep "Slot\|Inq"

DB Nodes running Solaris:
[root@edx22bur09db01 ~]# /opt/MegaRAID/MegaCli/MegaCli64 -pdlist -a0 | grep "Slot\|Inq"

Exadata DB Node disks on Linux are RAID5 with a global hotspare managed by LSI Megaraid. DB Node disks on Solaris are RAID1 managed by ZFS. Do not remove more than 1 disk at a time without checking RAID volume rebuild status. Refer to the below URL titled"Maintaining the Physical Disks of Oracle Database Servers" for details;
