SUNBUG 7117136

Affected Parts:

371-4571 - Power Distribution Board, SATA
371-4568 - Power Distribution Board, SATA

Symptoms

This problem occurs during mkisofs and is identified via the reservation failed message below:

At this point, the dvd drive still shows under iostat -En and cfgadm still shows the dvd drive is connected but the cdrw -l and cdrw -M command does not show the drive. Following a reboot, the iostat and cfgadm also loses visibility to the drive.

Impact

This problem causes the SATA DVD to not be seen via Solaris or the OBP so is not useable until the entire system is power cycled.

Changes

Contributing Factors

This occurs on Netra systems with the gen 1 TEAC SATA DVD 390-0443 using vendor certified media.

PATA DVD drives are not impacted by this issue, which is what shipped in the T5520 prior to September of 2009, and in the T5440 prior to November of 2009.

Cause

Root Cause

The DVD drive has an internal connection to the USB bus. The USB driver will disconnect a device if there is no longer any communication between the device and the driver, or if it sees many resets or NACKs on the bus. The Oxford/PLX USB device never resets, so it cannot answer the polls from the USB driver - so there never appears to be a device on the bus. The state the device enters can only be corrected by a power cycle.

Solution

Workaround

The system should be power cycled (power disconnected) for 15 seconds which will make the DVD accessible again.

Resolution

The new Oxford firmware, oxford_v10.zip resolves this problem on Power Distribution Boards (PDB), 371-4571 (Netra T5220) and 371-4568 (Netra T5440).

This firmware can be obtained by Oracle employees from the internal Netra T5220 Patches/Firmware page. External document 1359374.1 provides an example of firmware installation, and can be found at;

  https://support.us.oracle.com/oip/faces/secure/km/DocumentDisplay.jspx?id=1359374.1

Identification of Affected Parts (how to)

Document 1359374.1 indicates if the loaded firmware on PDB, 371-4571 (Netra T5220) and 371-4568 (Netra T5440) is the corrected version. The utility found in oxford_v10.zip is the only method verify this firmware's version.

Comments

New Netra T5220 PDB, 7026156 contains the new firmware, but either requires firmware 7.2.11.a or 7.4.2.a (or newer) or a workaround due to SUNBUG 7117136.  However the preferred method to correct this is to perform the firmware upgrade.
