__________

SUNBUG 7003775

Symptoms

3965 write errors

Impact

Permanent 3965 errors can occur on new or rebuilt T10000A and B drives.

Changes

Contributing Factors

Using newer media can contribute to this issue.

Cause

Root Cause

Engineering was able to reproduce the problem using new tapes on drives that had failed at field accounts. Engineering created a code change that reduces the risk of experiencing these types of errors. This change modifies the drive's error recovery procedures to recover gracefully from temporary SOT related errors. This should eliminate 3965 permanent errors seen by customers without any subsequent negative effects for future reads or abnormal job terminations due to the tape. The code is special build Rj46.109/209. After the media has had a few passes through a drive it is less susceptible to this problem.

Solution

Workaround

Rj46.109/209 special build code modifies the drive's error recovery procedures to recover gracefully from temporary SOT related errors which should eliminate 3965 perm errors seen by customers without any subsequent negative effects for future reads or abnormal job terminations due to the tape.

The code change is available through Tape Technical Support. Any account experiencing this issue should install this code versus replacing any further drives as drive replacement may or may not correct your 3965 problem. Any new installation of T10000B drives should consider installing this code especially if they plan to use new tapes.

Resolution

1.48.xxx T10000 drive code will embed the change that is in Rj46.109/209 code into GA code.  This code is scheduled for release in the calendar Q3 2011 time-frame.
