Issue Description:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Change History:
Dec/22/2004 Changed affected serial number range due to new
data from Manufacturing.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
It has been discovered that on a limited number of Sun Fire V440 systems,
the PCI Fan is mounted backwards in the PCI Fan Tray. This causes the
air flow to be misdirected at the SCSI backplane instead being pushed
across the PCI slots.
This could affect systems shipped between July and December of 2004. The
serial number range is 433xxxxxx to 450xxxxx. No system failures have been
reported as a result of this condition.
To identify an affected system, manual inspection of the PCI Fan Tray is
required. The fan has arrows indicating the direction of air flow. If the
fan is installed correctly, the arrows will be pointing toward the rear of the
unit. In addition, inspect the label of the installed fan. If it is pointing
toward the SCSI backplane and is visible, the fan is installed incorrectly.
If this issue occurs, elevated system temperatures could produce SCSI backplane
warning messages and possible system shutdown.
When this assembly was transferred to a new vendor in July 2004, the vendor
did not notice a discrepancy between the build instructions and the actual
assembly directions.
This issue has been addressed by updating the vendor assembly process with
the correct mounting procedure.

Corrective Action:
The following recommendation is provided as a guideline for authorized
Sun Services Field Representatives who may encounter the above
mentioned issue.
1. Remove the PCI Fan Tray from the chassis by following the procedure
documented on page 67 of the "Sun Fire V440 Server Parts Installation
and Removal Guide" (P/N 816-7729).
2. Remove the fan from the tray.
3. Turn the fan 180 degrees and reinstall the fan into the tray with the
air flow arrows pointing toward the rear of the unit.
4. Reinstall the PCI Fan Tray into the chassis by following the procedure
documented on page 70 of the above-referenced document.
Note: No tools are required to remove and reinstall the fan. The fan snaps
into position. A #2 Phillips screwdriver is required to remove and
reinstall the PCI Fan Tray.
Comments:
None.
