Issue Description:
Some Sun Blade and Sun Fire systems may fail to pass the configuration check
test during power on self-test if newly released 333MHz DIMMs are installed
without a minimum Open Boot PROM level.
The newly qualified 333MHz DIMMs are:
540-6399-01 FRU,DIMM,2x256MB,SPD0,1,PC2100+
540-6400-01 FRU,DIMM,2x512MB,SPD0,1,PC2100+
540-6401-01 FRU,DIMM,2x1GB,SPD0,1,PC2100+
370-7680-01 DIMM,256MB,SPD0,1,PC2100&FASTER
370-7670-01 DIMM,512MB,SPD0,1,PC2100&FASTER
370-7671-01 DIMM,1GB,SPD0,1,PC2100&FASTER
Here are the minimum system configurations. Anything below these levels will
experience the issue with OBP self-test if 333MHz speed DIMMs are installed.
Minimum OBP Configuration:
==========================
------------------------------------------------------------------
| Platform | Supports Same Speed | Supports Mixed Speed |
| | Memory Config | Memory Config |
|=================+=====================+==========================
| Sun Blade 1500 | 4.9.5 | 4.16.1 or later |
|-----------------+---------------------+--------------------------
| Sun Blade 2500 | 4.9.5 | 4.16.1 or later |
|-----------------+---------------------+--------------------------
| Sun Fire V210 | 4.11.4 | 4.16.1 or later |
|-----------------+---------------------+--------------------------
| Sun Fire V240 | 4.11.4 | 4.16.1 or later |
|-----------------+---------------------+--------------------------
| Sun Fire V250 | 4.11.4 | 4.16.1 or later |
|-----------------+---------------------+--------------------------
| Sun Fire V440 | 4.13.2 | 4.16.1 or later |
|-----------------+---------------------+--------------------------
| Netra 240 | 4.11.4 | 4.16.1 or later |
|-----------------+---------------------+--------------------------
| Netra 440 | 4.13.2 | 4.16.1 or later |
-----------------+---------------------+--------------------------
If this issue occurs, the following error messages will be displayed on the
console of above Sun Fire server and Sun Blade workstation platforms:
With diag-switch? = false:
ERROR: no valid memory configuration
System configuration failed, powering off
With diag-switch? = true:
CPU X Memory Configuration: InValid
Master CPU X Membase: 0 Memsize: 0
ERROR: no valid memory configuration
System configuration failed, powering off
After displaying the above error messages, the systems will then beep
3 times and power off. This message is only seen on the serial port. No
output will be displayed if the system has a graphics card installed.
Support for 333MHz Dual Data Rate DIMMs was added to these platforms, but it
requires a minimum OBP level. The issue is addressed via flash PROM patches
available for the affected platforms.
Implementation:
---
| | MANDATORY (Fully Proactive)
---
---
| | CONTROLLED PROACTIVE (per Sun Geo Plan)
---
---
| X | REACTIVE (As Required)
---
Corrective Action:
The following recommendation is provided as a guideline for authorized
Sun Services Field Representatives who may encounter the above
mentioned issue.
Install the latest platform flash PROM patch as needed. If there is more
than one bank of memory installed in the system, boot the system in
a reduced memory configuration and update the latest OBP (flash PROM)
patch for the platform in question. After you have successfully
installed the OBP image, power the system off and reinstall the new
333MHz speed memory.
Sun Blade 1500 116698-03 or later
Sun Blade 2500 117365-04 or later
Sun Fire V210 116056-03 or later
Sun Fire V240 116056-03 or later
Sun Fire V250 117365-04 or later
Sun Fire V440 115846-05 or later
Netra 240 116056-03 or later
Netra 440 115846-05 or later
Comments:
Two different pairs with different speed DIMMs installed (as listed in table
above as "mixed speed memory config"), serving the same CPU will slow down to
the slower rate. No error message is displayed

If a Radiance case involves the application of a FIN to solve a customer
issue, please complete the following steps in Radiance/SPWeb prior to
closing the case:
o Select "Field Information Notice" in the REFERENCE TYPE field.
o Enter FIN ID number in the REFERENCE ID field.
For example; I1111-1.
If possible, include additional details in the REFERENCE SUMMARY field
(ie. implementation complete, customer declined, etc.)
