Issue Description:
The LX50 Diagnostic CD v1.1 Update is now available for download from
the Sun Download Center. This release includes updates to the System
BIOS, BMC, and the Linux service partition. These updates resolve
known issues with this platform and it is recommended that LX50 systems
be upgraded to these firmware and software levels.
LX50 systems which shipped prior to November 18, 2002 will have lower
levels of firmware and should be updated with this latest release. In
addition, FRUs stocked at parts locations, including the System Board w/o
CPU w/o Memory (P/N F540-5436-01) and Sun LX50 Server CRU w/system bd,
w/o major CRUs (P/N F540-5440-01), will have lower firmware versions,
and should be updated during installation.
For a complete description of the issues addressed by this release and
a listing of any unresolved issues, please see the LX50 Update README
document which is available at the same URL as the Update CD image.

NOTE: The LX50 Diagnostic CD v1.1 Update now ships with all new
systems.
The LX50 Diagnostic CD v1.1 Update includes BIOS version 1064 and BMC
version 0063. To verify the version of BIOS or BMC currently installed
in an LX50 system:
1. Power off the Sun LX50 server and power on the server again.
2. During the start-up routine, press the key to enter the BIOS
Setup Menu Screen.
3. When the Setup Menu screen appears, use the arrow keys to scroll
to the Server option.
4. Select System Management from the list and press Enter.
The system information is displayed, including the BIOS and BMC
version.
5. To exit, follow the onscreen instructions or press the key.
For more information, refer to Chapter 4 in the Sun LX50 Server User
Guide.
The LX50 Diagnostic CD v1.1 Update includes a new version of the
firmware update utility fwpiaupd.exe. It also contains an updated
version of the Linux service partition which has the latest BIOS and
BMC versions plus an improved Platform Confidence Test (PCT) for system
diagnostics.
Known BIOS version 1064 Update Issues:
1. Memory errors status is now read from the BMC. Because this was not
done previous to BIOS 1064, error status bits have piled up in the
BMC. If you update the BIOS from a BIOS release prior to 1064, the
first time you boot with this BIOS you will probably get a message
saying all of your memory is bad. To clear this status, enter the
Setup/Advanced menu. Select the 'memory configuration' option.
Enable 'memory retest' at the bottom of this memory screen. Save
and exit the BIOS setup. This should clear the error message on the
very next boot.
2. The BIOS will report an error after POST that the CMOS jumper is not
installed correctly. This is because the BIOS update clears the
CMOS as a normal part of the update process. The next time the
system is booted, the BIOS will automatically clear this bit and
will not report this message.
Known BMC version 0063 Update Issue:
1. When updating the BMC from BMC 0058 to BMC 0063 (or later), console
redirection (if enabled) will fail the first time the system is
reset after BMC 0063 is flashed in. Redirection failures can be
avoided by doing an AC power cycle (which is the standard procedure)
or by powering off then on again via the front-panel power button.
This redirection failure only occurs as an artifact of flashing in
the new firmware; once redirection is restored, it will continue to
work normally. Also, flashing from BMC 0063 to later versions of BMC
firmware will not cause redirection failures.

Corrective Action:
The following recommendation is provided as a guideline for authorized
Sun Services Field Representatives who may encounter the above
mentioned problem.
The following recommendation is provided as a guideline for authorized
Sun Services Field Representatives who may encounter the above
mentioned problem.
A. If LX50 BIOS and BMC versions are lower those than described above,
advise customers to download the LX50 Diagnostic CD v1.1 Update
and use it to update their LX50 firmware to the latest levels.
Detailed Procedure:
1. Visit the Sun Download Center at the following URL:
http://www.sun.com/software/download/products/3e6fbe85.html
The Sun LX50 Server Diagnostic CD Update 1.1 page appears.
2. In the Download column, click the link Download.
If you are not logged in to the Sun Download Center, you must log in.
If you are already logged in, the Terms of Use page appears.
(continued)
3. Read through the License Agreement. If you agree to its terms and
conditions, click Continue.
The Download page appears.
4. In the table, click on the name of the file that you want to download.
5. Install the firmware update using the procedures found in the
Update_Procedures.pdf file.
B. Support personnel should be aware that System Board w/o CPU w/o Memory
(F540-5436-01) and Sun LX50 Server CRU w/system bd, w/o major CRUs
(F540-5440-01) may not contain the latest firmware versions. When either
of these is installed at a customer site, the BIOS and BMC versions should
be checked, and updated, if necessary.
