Issue Description:
IBM Discovery model disk drives installed in Sun systems may be
susceptible to early failure under certain circumstances due to Head
Disk Interference (HDI). This reliability issue can negatively impact
customer operations.
This issue only affects IBM Discovery 18Gb and 36Gb drives with the
following part numbers:
Sun P/N Vendor P/N
------- ----------
540-4520 IBM DDYS18350
540-4177 IBM DDYS36950
540-4440 IBM DDYFT18350
540-4367 IBM DDYFT36950
For all systems, to determine if a system has one of IBM Discovery drives,
do one of the following:
. If the system is down, run the "probe-scsi" command from the "ok"
prompt.
. If the system is up, run the "format" command.
. If Explorer has run, check the file /opt/SUNWexplorer/bin/diskinfo.
For A1000/A3x00 Arrays attached to a host, an alternative would be to
run one of the two following commands:
A. run #/usr/lib/osa/bin/drivutil -i
Ex: #/usr/lib/osa/bin/drivutil -i c1t0d0
B. From RM6 GUI,
RM6 GUI -> Configuration -> Module -> Profile -> drives
For T3/T3+ arrays, an alternative would be to use Explorer output or T3
commands to identify the part numbers. The "fru list" command can be used.

When this isue occurs, the following error code indicates that a drive
has failed due an HDI occurrence: "Sense Code 02x04".
When the drives are subjected to an excessive idle time (several
hours), the Head Air Bearing Surface (ABS) may pick up excessive disk
lubricant in the cavity of the ABS. This buildup of excessive
lubricant results in unstable flying characteristics with the ultimate
outcome of Head Disk Interference (HDI) and subsequent drive failures.
This issue is addressed by new disk drive firmware. The new drive
firmware monitors drive activity, and will exercise the drive head if
defined idle parameters are encountered. If idle times exceed the
algorithm metrics, the firmware will move the head at specific
intervals over the disk surface. Moving the head over the disk surface
provides an appropriate airflow which prevents lubricant accumulation
in the head ABS cavity.
There are two firmware patches, one for SCSI drives and one for T3 FCAL
drives.

Corrective Action:
The following recommendation is provided as a guideline for authorized
Sun Services Field Representatives who may encounter the above
mentioned problem.
All IBM Discovery disk drives should be upgraded to the current version
of the drive firmware available from SunSolve:
. For T3/T3+ FCAL installtions: patch 114704-01 or later
. For all other installations: patch 111534-04 or later
Special firmware installation instructions are provided in the README
files.
Comments:
None.

Implementation Footnote:
i) In case of MANDATORY FINs, Sun Services will attempt to contact
all affected customers to recommend implementation of the FIN.
ii) For CONTROLLED PROACTIVE FINs, Sun Services mission critical
support teams will recommend implementation of the FIN (to their
respective accounts), at the convenience of the customer.
iii) For REACTIVE FINs, Sun Services will implement the FIN as the
need arises.
