Issue Description:
Power kits with different electrical current ratings should not be
installed in the same SE9980 subsystem. If 30Amp and 60Amp power kits
are intermixed in the same susbsystem, the subsystem may operate
improperly, or not run at all. The current order process does not
prevent this illegal configuration from being ordered.
This issue affects any SE9980 system where a new DKU is ordered and
added to the configuration.
The SE9980 system can now be ordered with two electrical power
options:
Option 1 - 2 60Amp plugs
OR
Option 2 - 2 30Amp plugs on the DKU and 2 30Amp plugs on the DKC.
These plugs are the same as the 9970 3-phase power.
For the 30Amp option, a new 30Amp, 3 Phase AC box replaces the current
60Amp one. The new components became available on February 1, 2003.
The new 30Amp power option requires the storage controllers to be
connected to the AC line directly through their own pair of AC cables.
The DKC has its own 2 connections to 30Amp circuits. With the 3
Phase/60Amp feature, the DKC draws its power from the DKU.

DKU = Disk Unit
DKC = Disk Controller

Corrective Action:
The following recommendation is provided as a guideline for authorized
Sun Services Field Representatives who may encounter the above
mentioned problem.
If a customer is running an SE9980 DKC/DKU on a 60Amp circuit and wants
to add another DKU frame, please make sure that the customer and sales
engineer are aware of the power issue described above. A 60Amp power
kit must be ordered with the DKU.
If, for some reason, 60Amp power kits for additional DKU frames cannot
be obtained, then the existing 60Amp kits would need to be removed from
the subsystem and replaced with 30Amp kits. Please follow the
Installation/ De-installation Procedure from the DKC460I/DKU455I DISK
SUBSYSTEM Maintenance Manual at:
http://se9900.emea/information/9980manual.html
From the Installation Manual:
De-Installation Procedure

Power Cable Kit INST04-PCK-10 through INST04-PCK-80
AC Box Kit INST04-ACB-10 through INST04-ACB-70

Questions and Answers
---------------------
Q1. How do two 30A power supplies replace the two 60A power supplies
for 3 Phase power?
A1. With 3 Phase/60A power for the SE9980, the DKC draws it's current
through the DKU - that's why a 60A circuit is required. With 3
Phase/30A power, the DKC has it's own dual connections to 30A
circuits, bypassing the power connection to the DKU. It's
recommended that there be two 30A circuits for fault tolerance -
the DKC and each DKU has a connection to both circuits.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q2. Why isn't the 3 Phase/30A power option available on the SE9970?
A2. The SE9970, for 3 Phase power, currently requires a circuit rated at
30A.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q3. Can the SE9980 system power option be upgraded in the field?
A3. It is preferred that Power options are factory installed only. But
in case a power option needs to changed, please follow
installation/De-installation Procedure from DKC460I/DKU455I DISK
SUBSYSTEM Maintenance Manual.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q4. In what geographical regions are the SE9900 products in this
announcement available?
A4. Please contact your Sun Sales representative for the latest list of
supported countries.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q5. Is the new 30A 3-phase option for both the 9970 and 9980 (DKC and DKU)?
A5. Just for the the 9980, both DKC and DKU. The 9970 comes with (2) 30A.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q6. Is the new 30A 3-phase option for the US and Europe?
A6. Yes.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q7. Part number for the new option
A7. T9-DKC-F460I-3ECD 30amp power cord for Europe (50Hz)
T9-DKC-F460I-3UCD 30amp power cord for USA (60Hz)
T9-DKC-F460I-3PSD 30amp DKC power supply
T9-DKU-F455I-3PSD 30amp DKU power supply

Implementation Footnote:
i) In case of MANDATORY FINs, Sun Services will attempt to contact
all affected customers to recommend implementation of the FIN.
ii) For CONTROLLED PROACTIVE FINs, Sun Services mission critical
support teams will recommend implementation of the FIN (to their
respective accounts), at the convenience of the customer.
iii) For REACTIVE FINs, Sun Services will implement the FIN as the
need arises.
