Manual: 816-7606-10:
Issue Description:
Sun Fire V880 and V480 systems with 900 MHz UltraSPARC III+ Mask 2.3
CPUs will be unable to boot unless firmware version 4.6.3 or later is
installed. Older versions of firmware will not recognize the Mask 2.3
CPUs and POST will fail during the JTAG SCAN ID test.
Affected systems include any Sun Fire V880 or V480 with CPU/Memory
Board P/N 501-6334-03 (or later) with system firmware less than 4.6.3.
Mask 2.3 900 MHz USIII+ CPUs were added to P/N 501-6334-02 via ECO
WO_24570 and the board dash level was rolled to -03.
When this issue occurs, POST will fail during the JTAG SCAN ID test
with the following error message excerpt:
0>ERROR: TEST = Scan ring integrity
0>H/W under test = Motherboard/Centerplan Scan or I2C
0>MSG = Slot A (Cheetah 0, DCDS [0-7], SRAMs) Scan Ring Broken.
0>END_ERROR
0>ERROR: TEST = Scan ring integrity
0>H/W under test = Motherboard/Centerplan Scan or I2C
0>MSG =
*** Test Failed!! ***
0>END_ERROR
Mask 2.3 CPUs can be identified from OBP messages at power-on.

This issue has been addressed by the following firmware versions:
Sun Fire V880 4.6.3 Patch 112186-05 (or later)
Sun Fire V480 4.6.4 Patch 113034-02 (or later)
In addition, a doclet will be included with all CPU/Memory Board FRUs
containing Mask 2.3 USIII+ CPUs. The doclet (P/N 816-7606-10) explains
the importance of upgrading to the latest firmware version before
installing the replacement FRU.
Implementation:
---
| | MANDATORY (Fully Pro-Active)
---
---
| | CONTROLLED PRO-ACTIVE (per Sun Geo Plan)
---
---
| X | REACTIVE (As Required)
---
Corrective Action:
The following recommendation is provided as a guideline for authorized
Sun Services Field Representatives who may encounter the above
mentioned problem.
Upgrade all 900 MHz Sun Fire V880 or V480 systems to these minimum
firmware levels using patches available from SunSolve:
Sun Fire V880 4.6.3 Patch 112186-05 (or later)
Sun Fire V480 4.6.4 Patch 113034-02 (or later)
Note: Part numbers 501-6334-01 and -02 are not affected by this issue.
However, system firmware should still be upgraded to prevent an
outage in the event that those part numbers are replaced by FRU
501-6334-03 or later.
Comments:
None.
