Issue Description:
A small number of Seagate ST340824A 40GB disk drives for Netra X1 systems
have been misformatted as either 5GB or 7GB drives. Customers with these
drives may encounter an out of space condition when they are not expecting it,
and will not be able to address a significant portion of the drive space. This
may result in application errors and system downtime.
Visual inspection alone will not identify these drives. The problem
lies in the configuration of the drives themselves. If the drive is
installed, both physical inspection and command line inspection of the
drive will be necessary to determine if the drive was formatted correctly.
The drives will function normally, but will have their drive geometry
configured for either 5GB or 7GB. The primary issue is the possibility
of running out of drive space prematurely.
The only product affected is the Seagate ST340824A disk drive X-Option for
the Netra X1. 40Gb IBM and Fujitsu disk drives are not affected. The problem
happened at the equipment manufacturer when they were configuring the X-Option
drives. None of the disk drives installed into Netra X1 systems at the factory
are affected.
Approximately 700-800 drives are affected by this problem. Most of
these drives were reportedly shipped to the USA. The supplier screened
their inventory in-house and pulled recent inventory back from the
Product Distribution Center.
The datecodes of affected X-Option disk drives manufactured by Seagate
Technology are from August 24, 2001 through November 19, 2001.
The following URL contains the list of shipping destinations for these
X-Option disk drives:

To view this list, Click on the URL, Click on File -> Save As, and save to
local disk. Open as a StarOffice spreadsheet.
Although Seagate, IBM, and Fujitsu share the same X-Option number for this
40GB disk drive, only the Seagate disk drives are affected. Please refer to
the following supplier code number on the X-Option label in order to identify
the disk drive manufacturer:
Seagate Supplier code 0020772
Fujitsu Supplier code 0066152
IBM Supplier code 0010752
The bricks used at the drive vendor for copying format and software to
the new X-Option 40GB drives were switched, causing the 5GB or 7GB
images to be copied to the new unformatted 40GB drives.
Regular audits will be implemented by the supplier Quality Team to
prevent the recurrence of similar issues in the future.

Corrective Action:
The following recommendation is provided as a guideline for authorized
Enterprise Services Field Representatives who may encounter the above
mentioned problem.
Enterprise Services should be aware of the issue and be prepared to
either reformat or replace an affected drive after consulting with the
customer to discuss the issue and address any concerns. Physical
inspection of the drive label as well as command line investigation of
the formatting parameters will be necessary.
Please adhere to the following procedure to identify and correct this
disk drive problem.
If The X-Option Shipping Box is unopened:
On the X-Option box label,
1. Check the X-Option part number; if it is X7096A, then continue.
2. Check the supplier code (SC) section; if it is the Seagate Supplier
Code (0020772) continue.
3. Check the date code under the serial number (SN) section to see if it
falls between 0132 and 0147.
4. If the drive is identified as a Seagate 40GB IDE Drive within the
affected date range, please replace the drive.
Do not use the standard ES replacement methods - use the CIC process to
obtain a new 40GB X-Option drive. This will enable us to return the
drive to the equipment manufacturer for credit.
If the drive has already been installed into a system:
1. Use the "verify" option to the 'format' command from the command line.
If the drive shows as this type,
ST340824A
and if the drive size shows as 5Gb or 7Gb, the drive has been
misconfigured and action should be taken. The drive type should
also be checked by physically inspecting the part number and
vendor code on the drive label.
2. If the drive version/model is ST340824A (40GB) and the total space
is much smaller than 40GB (around 5GB or 7GB), then please do the
following:
a. If the drive has not been used for data, reformat the drive
using the commands supplied below.
OR
b. If the customer has stored data on the drive, backup any data and
reformat the drive using the commands supplied below. After the
format, restore customer data.
OR
c. Replace the drive via the CIC process.
NOTE: The above choice is primarily based on customer need. If they
request drive replacement please use the CIC process to swap the
drive. These drives are 40GB, certified by the supplier - please
reassure the customer that reconfiguration is fully backed by SMI
and try to make the customer comfortable with the reconfiguration
of the drive.
Please use the following procedure to reformat an affected disk drive:
