Issue Description:
This FIN is to inform the field of a new style GBIC that will be
shipping with A5X00 Storage Arrays. Installing a FINISAR GBIC in any
platform other than A5X00 will result in a restricted access condition
which may result in unanticipated downtime. Lab tests have
demonstrated that removing a FINISAR GBIC from any storage platforms
other than an A5X00 may require removal of communication/ data cables,
interface cables, and even power cables.

The new GBIC provides the same performance and external cable interface
as the current GBIC, however the module locking mechanism is different
from the currently field deployed GBIC. The new GBIC is locked into
position with module tabs. The old GBIC is locked into position with a
bailed locking mechanism.

Removing a GBIC with a bailed lock mechanism does not require a clear
space on either side of the GBIC. Removing a GBIC with locking module
tabs DOES require clear space on the lateral sides of the GBIC. Thus,
installing a Finisar GBIC in any platform other than the A5X00 may
result in a restricted access condition, which may result in unplanned
system downtime to rectify. Tests in Engineering, Factory, and ES
Reliability have concluded that removing the new GBIC from
platforms other than A5X00 is very difficult.

As a troubleshooting technique, field personnel may from time to time
swap GBICs from one A5X00 array to another A5X00 array. In order to do
this with the new Finisar GBIC, the customers may have to power off a
system, or discontinue operations while the field engineer is removing
cables in order to provide lateral access space adjacent to the GBIC
locking tabs. The new GBIC cannot be installed/removed easily from
platform to platform, and swapping FINISAR GBICs as a troubleshooting
technique may result in unanticipated downtime.

The FINISAR GBIC is locked into position with lateral module tabs. The
old GBIC is locked into position with a bailed locking mechanism. Refer
to the following URL for photo close-ups of both GBICs and the locking
mechanisms.

Corrective Action:
An Authorized Authorized Enterprise Services Field Representative may
avoid the above mentioned problems by following the recommendations as
shown below.

Since the new GBIC is not interchangeable from platform to platform, do
not install a FINISAR GBIC other than A5X00 storage array products.

To install or remove the GBICs, please adhere to the following procedures:

  OLD STYLE (IBM):
  ----------------

To install:	Slide the GBIC into the port with the bail in the unlocked
(up) position. Once the GBIC is firmly seated in the port,
move the bail down to the locked position.

To remove:	Move the bail up to the unlocked position and pull on the
		plastic tab of the bail.

  NEW STYLE (Finisar):
  --------------------

To install:	The Finisar has a lateral latch. Slide the GBIC into the
port until you hear a click. Be sure that both sides of
		the GBIC have engaged.

To remove:	Push the module tabs together and pull the GBIC out of the
		disk array.
Comments:
Note: The new style GBIC will only ship with new systems. The new
style GBIC will NOT ship with X-option Interface Boards, nor will
the new style GBICs be provided as a spare parts.
