NOTICE: Product Update Bulletin - Withdrawal of 45GB A5000 Support on E10000
Servers.
Issue Description:
The Data Center High Performance and Storage Product Groups have
announced the withdrawal of support for the 45.5GB StorEdge A5000
on Ultra Enterprise 10000 Servers. After April 15, 1998 you will
no longer be able to order the 45.5GB StorEdge A5000 as an X-Option
with the Ultra Enterprise 10000 Server.
Support for the 45.5GB StorEdge A5000 configuration has been with-
drawn for the following reasons:
1. The 45.5GB A5000 lacks RAS capability. One interface board and
one power supply have been removed.
2. There are no guidelines on when to add power supplies as disks
are added.
3. The deletion of one interface board introduces a single point of
failure.
4. The design point for the E10000 is the Data Center. The 45.5GB
StorEdge A5000 does not meet those requirements. It is class-
ified as a tabletop device.
*Sun will will continue to provide support for those existing customers
having an E10000 Server configured with 45.5GB StorEdge A5000(s) (table-
top versions).
Corrective Action:
To improve reliability in the customer environment, there are two sug-
gested approaches, with the 2nd option being the recommended course of
action. Both approaches involve upgrading the 45.5GB StorEdge A5000(s)
(tabletop) configuration.
1. Customers can order & install in the 45GB A5000(s) (tabletop), an
extra power supply (for N+1 power redundancy) and an extra Interface
board (for redundancy and to eliminate the single point of failure).
Options order number, description and unit price shown below:
QTY 1 X6734A Interface Board USD 3,650.00
QTY 1 X9687A Power Supply USD 1,850.00
2. The minimum A5000 configuration supported on the E10000 is the 127GB
StorEdge A5000 in a rack mounted configuration with redundant power
supplies and interface boards. Customers are encouraged to migrate
to this recommended configuration.
*Customers that wish to comply with either of the above mentioned
StorEdge A5000 upgrade recommendations, are prompted to contact
their local Sun Sales Representative for assistance with pricing
and product availability.
