Issue Description:
Seagate Cheetah 7 146GB FC-AL disk drives, model ST3146807FC, and Seagate
Cheetah7 73GB FC-AL disk drives, model ST373307FC, are experiencing a
higher than expected failure rate due to a spindle motor issue.
This issue was originally reported in FCO A0239-1. The purpose of this FCO
is to expand the affected serial number range for only the above mentioned
Seagate disks. Customer data has demonstrated that for both drives, all
serial numbers are now at risk and the AFR is outside of the spec.
All drives previously listed in FCO A0239-1, but not listed as affected in
this FCO are now meeting Annualized Failure Rate (AFR) goals. For further
on this subject please follow the link below.

Identification of Affected Parts
--------------------------------
To determine if a system has one of the Seagate Cheetah 7 drives that may be
affected by this issue, do one of the following:
1) If the system is down, run the "probe-scsi" command from the "ok" prompt.
EXAMPLE:
--------
ok probe-scsi

Symptoms
--------
The specific failure mode is spindle motor failure. Unfortunately this
failure mode results in a DNR or Drive Offline condition with no
leading indicators or previous error messages.
The most frequent failures seen are, "Drive not ready" or the drive
may produce excessive read, write or media errors.
Sample error messages:

When this issue occurs, the following error codes may indicate that a drive
has failed due a failed spindle motor:

Additionally there is a passive script that can be run against later
generation storage array error logs to determine drive health in terms
of spindle failures. See the following URLs:
For T3, SE6120, or SE6920 based products see:
http://pts-storage.west/products/T3/tools/gen_sense/
- For this tool to work and be effective drive FW level 0407 (A507 on
the T3) must be installed on the HDDs, reference FIN 100664.
For SE3X10 based product see:
http://pts-storage.west/products/SE33xx/tools/s3kdcu/
- For this tool to work and be effective, drive FW level 0407 must be
installed on the HDDs, reference FIN 100664.
Root cause has determined that spindles at the ends of the tolerance
distribution, may result in less oil, which may lead to inadequate
lubrication and thus cause the drive to fail.
Seagate has implemented a new spindle motor design as well as an enhanced
test in their manufacturing process.
Corrective action was made available by Sun manfacturing via ECO# WO_30867
released 12 April, 2005 and WO_30780 released 10 March 2005.
All affected parts began being purged from the Services
Regional Stocking Locations (RSLs) via GSAP #3096.
Implementation:
---
| | MANDATORY (Fully Pro-Active)
---
---
| | CONTROLLED PRO-ACTIVE (per Sun Geo Plan)
---
---
| X | UPON FAILURE
---
Replacement Time Estimate:
1 hour
Special Considerations:
None.
Corrective Action:
Upon Failure, replace like for like part numbers using normal service procedures.
Note: RSL depots have been purged, so you should receive a non-affected replacement
drive. This may be a Hitachi, Fujitsu, or a Seagate disk drive. To ensure you have
received a non-affected Seagate, look for the following information on the drive
label (located on the back of the drive). Look for the Seagate logo, and just below
the Seagate logo the following indicators are present:
Identification of NON-affected, good disk:
A. just below the logo
Cheetah 10K.7
B. in large letter below 1st horizontal line:
ST3146807FC OR ST373207FC
C. just below the Sun logo:
ST314680FSUN146G OR ST373207FSUN
D. at the bottom of the label:
SunPN 390-0171 for 146GB FC
Sun PN 390-0168 73gb FC
Sun PN 390-0165 73gb FC
Identification of AFFECTED disk:
Do not use a new FRU if it has either of the following:
affected DRIVE model number = ST3146807FC or ST373307FC
affected SunPN part number = 390-0118 or 390-0121
The replacement bare drives will be datecode 0521 and above and
GSAP# 3096 printed on the box label.
Comments:
None.
CHANGE HISTORY:

why some drives listed in FCO A0239-1 are not listed in this FCO.
Added information on "a passive script" near the end of the ISSUE
DESCRIPTION section.
