Issue Description:
Specific Sun Fire B1600 Blade systems could experience intermittent operation
failures with the Switch and System Controller (SSC) or loss of power to the
SSC. Each system ships with a single SSC and has space to fit a second unit.
Affected units were ONLY shipped as X-options, to be fitted as the second SSC
in the system.

If the unit is shaken or connectors touched, they could become loose. The SSC
uses connectors 4, 5 & 6 to supply voltage to the SSC, and data between the
SSC and the Sun Fire B1600 shelf. Customers may experience intermittent
operations or total outage of the SSC due to any loss of signals or power
through these connectors.

Loose pressfit connectors were found on a batch of Switch and System
Controllers (SSCs) by the supply vendor's visual inspection during manufacture
of the controller. Although no issues have been seen in the field to-date, it
is possible that a customer could experience outages due to loss of signals or
power through the connectors.

This issue has been traced to a batch of units which, except for 94 xoptions
that had already shipped and 12 spares distributed internally within Sun, were
contained and returned to the supplier.

Root cause determined the switch fab press-fit pin through holes were drilled
to 2.76 mils during the SSC assembly process at the manufacturer. The
specification requires holes to be 2.36mils. Analysis found that a 3.1 mil
drill had been used instead of the required 2.9 mil drill.

Only those customers in the list below are affected. This is an Internal
Only document and not visible to our Service Partners;

Corrective action was put in place at the vendor by adding a Quality Process
step in the manufacturing process as of November 1, 2003 to verify the hole
sizes are correct.

Corrective action was made available in Sun Services via DPCO# 440 as of
March 16, 2004.
Parts Affected:

Implementation:
---
| | MANDATORY (Fully Pro-Active)

| | UPON FAILURE
 ---
Replacement Time Estimate:
1 hour
Special Considerations:
Corrective Action:
Using the provided Customer List, proactively replace ONLY affected SSCs:

replace 540-5185-04 with 540-5185-04 (or above)

Replacement parts will either have a "DPCO 440" sticker or will not be in
the affected serial number range provided in the Customer List.

All Sun inventories have been screened and purged of affected controllers.
All reworked/good (previously affected) controllers will have a DPCO 440
sticker. Controllers not in the affected Serial Number list may not have a
DPCO sticker, but should still be considered good.

The affected Serial Number list may be viewed via the below link;
