----------------------------------------------------------------------------

In rare instances, Sun Fire 4810/6800 systems may be susceptible to a thermal
event due to certain power supply capacitors. Even with power supply
redundancy, this could cause a platform outage and possible damage to other
components within the system.

Based on field failure data, A152 power supplies from manufacturing week 19 to
week 30 of year 2001 have been determined to be impacted. This affects some
Sun servers manufactured between week 22 of year 2001 to week 14 of year 2003.
These servers would have shipped out of Sun Manufacturing between June 1, 2001
and April 7, 2003.

The affected power supply serial number range is:

	 0042025-0119D01579 to 0042025-0130D08200

A complete list of affected systems is provided via the below "Internal Only"

disk using your Netscape 'file' button and select 'save as', then
     open file locally using StarOffice.

The power supply may be identified by physical inspection of the part
number/serial number bar code label as shown below:

Sun bar code label example below:

       Serial# \\\\
       Code ---- date code - 0224 = year 2002, week 24

In assist the field in the communication of this issue to customers, a Customer
Letter is provided via the below "Internal Only" URL;

Root cause analysis determined that during the power supply assembly process,
the capacitors were flexed while inserting a cable into the power supply mother
board causing unobserved micro-cracks in these ceramic capacitors. Over time,
these cracks can enlarge and result in a short, causing a power supply failure.

Important Note:

The original Sun Alert 56360, dated 03-Sep-2003, listed a larger serial number
range of power supplies manufactured from week 02, 2000 to week 24, 2002. Upon
further investigation this range was narrowed to the range listed above as "A152
power supplies from manufacturing week 19 to week 30 of year 2001". The reason
for narrowing the range was due to two events that were observed, and previously
believed to be related, have been ruled as unrelated to this issue.

The Sun Alert will be re-released shortly.

Special Considerations:
Warning, if your customer has received a server that was originally shipped to
Sun or was owned by a another company prior to shipment to your site, please
check the server serial number list to vaildate that servers at your site are
not impacted.

If there are a large number of servers at site, replacement of
A152 power supplies should be prioritzed by replacing the following
range of A152 power supplies first (Week 19, 2001 to Week 24, 2001) :

	0042025-0119D01579 - 0042025-0124D04849
