Issue Description:
When the Annex Terminal Concentrator is powered on, it sends a break
signal to each port, bring down any attached Sun Servers to the OBPROM
prompt.
Although any attached server can survive a power failure on the Annex
Terminal Concentrator, the servers will be interrupted when power is
restored to the Terminal Concentrator unless the serial cables are
disconnected while the Annex Terminal Concentrator is performing its
POST.
The root cause of this problem has been attributed to the supplier who
substituted an "Analog Devices" part for a "Unitrobe" part at location U43
on the internal logic board of the Sun Terminal Concentrator (370-1434-02).
Only units that contain the "Unitrobe" chip part at location U43 should be
considered good.
Annex Terminal Concentrators shipped between March 27th and May 14th,
1998 from Bay Networks are suspect. Xylogics units are not affected.
There are two ways in which to determine if a unit should be replaced;
1. Units still in original vendor shipping boxes:
----------------------------------------------
If the product is still in its original box, there is a DOM (Date of
Manufacture) number on the box, anything dated 3-27-98 to 5-15-98 is
suspect and should be returned for rework. The first 4 digits of the
serial number on the box represents the year and week the unit was
manufactured.
New Terminal Concentrator units with the Unitrobe chip parts are being
shipped from Bay Networks as of 5/15/98 and will also have a "MDF 1026"
label on the "part number - serial number label" found on the outside of
the original shipping box from Bay Networks, Inc.
2. Units installed in systems at customer sites:
---------------------------------------------
Inspect each Annex Terminal Concentrator by looking at bottom of the unit,
for the following labels:
a) Manufacture/serial number label - Bay Networks, Inc.
b) Adjacent to the Bay Networks, Inc. label look for the following
information printed on the small white label:
----------------------------------
| MLB 301250-A REV 00 |
| |
| |---SUSPECT UNIT
| |
| |
----------------------------------
Only the above part number "301250-A" is affected PROVIDED an additional
white label as specified below is NOT present.
Bay Networks has implemented the following labels to identify product that
have been screened for the above problem and if present will be on top of
the MLB label shown above.
---------------------- ---------------------
| MDF 1024 | OR | MDF 1026 |
---------------------- ---------------------
This indicates to Sun that this Terminal Concentrator has been
inspected by the vendor and found to contain the "Unitrobe" chip
identifying it as a good unit and okay to use.

Replacement Time Estimate:

Special Considerations:
Of the 139 Terminal Concentrators shipped out of Sun manufacturing between
March 27, 1998 and May 13, 1998 only 65 units are suspect due to a StopShip
(WW001#03518) put in place at that time. All 139 units should be checked as
outlined above.
Good spares should have a Date of Manufacture (DOM) of earlier than 3-27-98
or later than 5-15-98.
The majority of Annex Terminal Concentrators will be installed on HA or PDB
systems and sold as part of the foundation package.
Corrective Action:
Replace all affected 370-1434-02 Bay Networks Annex Terminal Concentrators with
a 370-1434-02 having a Date of Manufacture (DOM) outside the affected range or
with an MLB Label other than 301250-A as specified above.
