Issue Description:
An Ultra 2 running onboard hme0 interface may experience a Panic or Hang
condition. The problem can occur on Ultra 2 systems that contain one or
a combination of the following:
a) SunFastEthernet 2.0 SBus card 501-2919-XX
b) SunSwift Sbus Card 501-2739-XX
c) DWIS/S (Differential) SBus card, 370-1704-XX
d) TurboGX CG6 Color Frame Buffer Sbus Card 501-2922-XX
e) FDDI 5.0, 370-2339-XX SAS and 370-2340-XX DAS
Other problem symptoms that may be experienced are:
SUNW,hme0: txmac did not reset
SUNW,hme0: hme_init: phy reset failure
Failures typically occur within 24 hours of system initialization. The
system will not experience this problem if only the onboard hme0 device
is used OR if just one external SBus card is used. Other systems that
are using two (2) SBus hme cards (hme1, hme2) have not experienced this
problem.
Confirm that the system is experiencing this problem by disabling
64-bit transfers (run 32-bit transfer mode). If disabling 64-bit
transfers clears the "hang" condition replace the Ultra 2 CPU board.
To disable the 64-bit transfer mode for "hme" and "SCSI":
/etc/system
------------------------------
set fas:fas_enable_sbus64=0
set hme:hme_64bit_enable=0
The solution for the above problem is to rework the Ultra 2 motherboard
(p/n 501-3132) to the dash -14 level. Corrective actions have been
incorporated in Sun Manufacturing in early June 1998 per ECO# WO_13338.
Implementation:
---
| | MANDATORY (Fully Pro-Active)
---
---
| | CONTROLLED PRO-ACTIVE (per Sun Geo Plan)
---
---
| X | UPON FAILURE
---
Replacement Time Estimate:
30 minutes
Special Considerations:
Corrective Action:
Replace 501-3132-13 (or below) with 501-3132-14 (or above).
Comments:
The 501-3132-14 is a refinement of the rework implemented on the 501-3132-13
motherboard. In most cases, the -13 board is adequate to solve the symptoms,
but in a few cases the -14 is necessary because the "SMDs" or Surface Mount
Devices used are more effective than the "through hole parts" used on -13 boards.
Billing Type:
Warranty: Sun will provide parts at no charge under Warranty
Service. On-Site Labor Rates are based on how the
system was initially installed.
Contract: Sun will provide parts at no charge. On-Site Labor Rates
are based on the type of service contract.
Non Contract: Sun will provide parts at no charge. Installation by
Sun is available based on the On-Site Labor Rates
defined in the Price List.

Implementation Footnote:
________________________
i) In case of Mandatory FCOs, SunService will attempt to contact all known
customers to recommend the part upgrade.
ii) For controlled proactive swap FCOs, SunService mission critical support
teams will initiate proactive swap efforts for their respective accounts,
as required.
iii) For Replace upon Failure FCOs, SunService partners will implement the
necessary corrective actions as and when they are required.
